It's been great using the games you showed us last summer, both in my classes for young children and my private lessons. It's fun when the kids come in every week asking to learn a new game. It keeps me on my toes! I am so impressed with the rhythms my young ones have learned. Wow! I heard one of the older siblings (who takes from another teacher) who was watching his 5 year old sister play "War" whisper to his mom, "I haven't even learned how to count that yet!"
You would have laughed this summer. I held a small flute camp for a week with middle schoolers and introduced a lot of your games. By the end of the week, it was all I could do to get them to play the flute. All they wanted to do was play games! They even came up with one that was pretty hard but a lot of fun. There's a very popular game among teens now. No way I can explain it on e-mail, but we figured out it could be done with a metronome in 4/4 and 3/4 time. So the teens were happy playing "their" game and I was happy because they were learning to keep time.

Hi Sharie - I think it’s important for the hand sign to match what the note or rest look like. Of course, please do what works, but I think making the hand sign for the half and whole rests in front of the eyes is good. Are you making a pulse with your hand to match the beat as you say “rest rest” or “rest rest rest rest”? Making the quarter note hand sign as you describe could also be useful for understanding as you explain the half and whole rests. Keep thinking of questions and thanks for writing. michiko
