Staff Pack
The staff pack is used with beginning to advanced games to teach students (ages 2 - adult) about the staff. Students can place clefs, write notes, learn solfege, write intervals, use ledger lines, write key signatures, scales, triads, chords and practice sight-singing and take dictation using this set of materials. In short, this packet is very versatile and useful.
This set includes:
- one double-sided slate (16" x 11.5") with a grand staff on one side and a single staff, without clefs, on the other. Both sides are printed on white with colored borders.
- clear transparencies cut into rectangular shapes of the treble, alto and bass clefs, sharps, flats, naturals, double sharps, and double flats and three sizes of ledger lines.
- two instructional cards: The song: "Hello Grand Staff" and The 5 C's Game
About the Staff Pack
The grand staff has printed clefs and a modified space between the two clefs with only enough space for the three notes found between the clefs: B, middle C and D. This makes it easier for students to learn the relationship between the two staffs. The single staff is without a clef so students can choose the clef they want to use. The clefs are in cheerful colors to match the grand staff cards, blue (like the sky) for treble clef and green (like the grass) for bass clef. Plain black clefs are also included. Each colored clef has a cute little face to subtly direct the student to the portion of the clef that designates the line note that carries the clef's letter name. The clear ledger line sheets can be used when needed - just like real music. They come in three sizes: single-, double- and triple-line sizes. There are enough sharps in warm colors and flats in cool colors to practice writing all the key signatures. The magic notes and magic wands can be ordered separately.
The staff slate is cut and scored so it will fold in fourths for easier transport and to fit inside the Puppy Packet carry box. To help your slate lie flat gently, but firmly fold the folds the opposite way and smooth them with your finger. After using it, take care to refold it the way it is meant to fold so it lasts for a long time.
Using the Staff Pack
These materials are used in combination with alphabet cards, do re mi cards, wild cards, grand staff cards, magic notes and magic wands. When used with games from the book Music Mind Games, these materials help students:
- learn about the staff and the difference between a line and a space
- learn how bass, tenor, alto and treble clefs are placed on the staff
- learn intervals (e.g. seconds, thirds, fifths)
- learn solfege
- take melodic and harmonic dictation
- learn notes on the staff using various combinations of clefs
- learn the position of ledger line notes in relationship to the staff
- read and write sight-singing patterns
- learn the relationship of the notes and clefs to their instruments
- write key signatures, scales, triads and chords
You will use the staff slate, clefs, accidentals and ledger lines to play such games as: Placing Clefs, These 5 C's, Staff Dictation, Put Your Finger On It, Take Away, Sharp Scales, Fix the Key Signatures, Flat Key Signature Fine, Four Kinds of Triads, Inversion Drop, and Minor Scale Fine.

The cards are perfectly numbered for this game, but if we're short on time I may only do a grid of 16, possibly only including cards the student knows. And I'm not very strict about rules; sometimes I'll prompt the student to help her remember.
